Langelandsfortet – an exciting experience close to Skrøbelev Manor

If you visit Langeland, Langelandsfortet is one of the island’s most fascinating attractions.
Located on the southern tip near Bagenkop, the fort offers a rare insight into Denmark’s role during the Cold War –
with authentic installations, stories and exhibitions that bring history to life.
It is also an ideal excursion for guests staying at Skrøbelev Manor:
The trip down through open fields, small villages and coastal landscapes where South Langeland shows its raw and beautiful nature.

A historic fort from the Cold War

Bunkers and facilities at Langelandsfortet
Authentic bunkers and facilities – ready for you to explore.

The Langeland Fort was built in the 1950s as an important part of Denmark’s coastal defense. The location was strategic:
From here you could keep an eye on shipping traffic in the waters around the Baltic Sea, and in a time of global tension,
surveillance, preparedness and communication became part of everyday life. Today, the fort is a museum where you can move
around the original areas – and get a sense of what it was like to be “on the outside” of a major political conflict
that also left its mark on Denmark.

The best thing about the visit is that the experience works for many types of visitors: Feel free to geek out on the history in detail, or
take a more hands-on approach and spend time exploring the area, seeing the exhibitions and feeling the atmosphere.

Visitors can experience, among other things:

  • Original gun emplacements and bunkers
  • Exhibitions on espionage, surveillance and preparedness during the Cold War
  • Military equipment and vehicles in the outdoor area
  • Stories about Denmark’s defense and the time when the world was divided into blocs

This makes the fort an exciting experience for history buffs and families with children alike – especially because there is
plenty to see and the area invites you to walk around at your own pace.

Practical information – how to plan your visit

From Skrøbelev Manor, the drive to Langelandsfortet typically takes about 35-40 minutes. This makes it ideal as a
half-day excursion – for example, before a quiet afternoon at the estate or as a morning trip where you can still make it back for
a nice dinner.

Many people combine the fort with a trip to Bagenkop Harbour (cozy atmosphere and boat watching) or a
short walk along the coast, where the wind and views really show South Langeland from its most open and dramatic side.
Feel free to bring an extra sweater – the coast can be chilly, even on nice days.

Tip:
Plan your visit in the middle of the day and return to the estate in time to enjoy a dinner in the Knight’s Hall – that way you get
